BABA AND JONA (Part 2 )
BABA AND JONA (Part 2 )
By: Kehinde Ayoola J P
Squadron Leader Priye Horsfall had stepped aside to allow the old soldier enter the helicopter first. But baba, who usually walked with a sprint in his steps, had been tentative this morning. He did a sharp left turn to see baba standing at the foot of the chopper. He looked at baba in 'amused confusion'. The old man's expression was blank as he gave the giant metal bird a thorough lookover.
" This is a beautiful chopper" he finally said.
"Thank you sir!" Priye replied.
Baba climbed in, sat down on one of the 5 seats and belted up. His aide, a middle-aged man with a with a lanky stature and balding forehead, took the next seat by his side. Priye's assistant pilot, Flight-Lieutenant Memunatu Kabba, saluted baba as well. She is a tall, dark lady with bright eyes. She is the kind of person that one wonders what she was doing in the military. She could easily make the cut as an A-list model - with that figure. At 28, what she would look like at 18 is a matter of conjecture. Baba kept looking at her, his eyes narrowing and squinting once in a while. Throughout the one and half hours' flight to the Villa, Memunatu held Baba's attention. Presently, they were in the Villa and Baba was led through a long corridor. The place was familiar to him anyway. If anyone would get lost here, it was not baba. He stayed here for 8 years. A huge, oak-panelled twin door opened and Colonel Ojogbane Adegbe, ADC to Mr President, stood to attention, saluted smartly and led Baba through another door which opened via a sensor. Yet another door opened and Baba was ushered into the presence of Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
"Mr President, how are u?"
"I'm fine Baba, thank u sir"
He motioned him to a seat, a straight-backed chair opposite another one in the middle of the room. Jonathan gave his ADC a look and he and all the others that came with him left just the two men in the room.
As soon as they were alone, Mr Prsident said:
"Baba, I thank u for honouring my invitation. May God continue to honour u too sir"
"Woo, Ebele.." Hunhun-harr (clears his throat) " let's cut out the niceties, why have u called me here? I have meetings at 12 at 'Agbeloba House' at Abeokuta"
"Well Baba it is not my intention to waste your time. I'm sure u know I have many pressing affairs of state"
"Then let's get on with it"
"Very well sir. I have noticed that u now dance with the opposition baba. Yet u are the one who installed Yar'Adua and myself here. We..."
Cuts him short: "Emi Okikiola Aremu? Dance? Is it bata, dundun or atilogwu dance? Or can I dance skelewu at 77?"
"No, Baba, who is talking of skelewu? If u dance that one, I'll have to summon an air ambulance o"
" Chaii, is it me u are joking with? Hmmm Ebele, we have sharpened your teeth and u now bite us with it"
"No o Baba, I just reply u as u gave it to me sir"
"Ok o, no wonder, before it was that your spokesman, that apari Doyin okupe, who used to abuse me. Now u too have joined, abi?"
"No Baba, I just called u to remind u that u put us here. We are your children. And there is God in all we are doing bcos u seem to have neglected us"
"Ehn hen, I know it will come to this" Clears his throat again "there is God. Oh yes, your First Lady even said it. She made it to become the 3rd stanza of our National Anthem" begins to dance and sing:
"Chaii
Chaiiii
Diaris God oooo
Diariss God ooo
All the blood u are sharing in Boronu
Diariss God o..."
Then, he stood up.
"Woo Ebele, if diaris nothing better to say, Obasanjo has things to do at Agbeloba House"
With that, he stood up, turned round and made for the door, leaving the President staring at him as he left.
May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
