Intolerance, discrimination and sentiments By Abdulrazaq O Hamzat

Image
In a multi cultural and multi religious society like Nigeria, violation of basic rights breeds chaos and disobedience. While discrimination, especially on the basis of religion causes disunity among people, sentiments on the other hand, causes fracture and motivate the feeling of revenge. This is why every lover of peace and unity must at all times, be sensitive to the basic rights of others and not be seen as obstacle for no just cause. Following my publication on the hijab controversy at the Nigerian law school few days ago, titled ‘’Nigerian Law School and the need for change’’, several people had reached out to me to give their views on the subject matter. In view of the numerous messages, I feel that i owe them further explanation in the interest of public good. So, this publication is a follow up to the first one, hoping that people might learn to understand the implication of their actions and its effect on peaceful coexistence, which will directly or indirectly have eff

Another Female law graduate vow to attend call to bar with hijab next year

Image
Following the refusal of Nigeria Law School to call Miss Firdaus Amasa to bar for refusing to take off her hijab last week, another female law graduate from University of Ilorin, Laylah Al-Mubarakah has vow to attend the same programme next year with her hijab on. The father of the lady, Alhaji Abubakar Aliagan, a lecturer in the university of Ilorin went to social media to announce the resolve of his daughter in solidarity with Firdaus. He stated that, ''MY DAUGHTER, EVEN IF AM NOT ALIVE AND THE MATTER IS NOT RESOLVED........YOU RECEIVE MY BLESSINGS........IN THE LIKE MANNER THE FATHER OF FIRDAUS IS NOT DISTURBED'' Alhaji ABubakar Aliagan wrote on his facebook page as follows: Firdaus Amasa is a daughter of a dear friend. She was not call to bar because she was adamant on her Islamic mode of dress. She was a year ahead of my daughter at the Faculty of law, University of Ilorin. When her courageous father, Mallam Oba Amasa, came to my house ( he sometimes pray t

It’s been 50 years since Britain left. Why are so many African judges still wearing wigs?

Image
The British gave up their last colonies in Africa half a century ago. But they left their wigs behind. Not just any wigs. They are the long, white, horsehair locks worn by high court judges (and King George III). They are so old-fashioned and so uncomfortable, that even British barristers have stopped wearing them. But in former British colonies — Kenya, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Malawi and others — they live on, worn by judges and lawyers. Now, a new generation of African jurists is asking: Why are the continent’s most prominent legal minds still wearing the trappings of the colonizers? It’s not just a question of aesthetics. The wigs and robes are perhaps the most glaring symbol of colonial inheritance at a time when that history is being dredged up in all sorts of ways. This year, Tanzanian President John Magufuli described a proposed free-trade agreement with Europe as a “form of colonialism.” In Zimbabwe, President Robert Mugabe still refers to the British as “thieving colonialists

Nigerian Law School and the need for change

Image
By Abdulrazaq O Hamzat Amasa A Firdaus A law graduate or lawyer that cannot defend his or her own basic rights as contained in the constitution does not deserve to be called a legal practitioner. Why because, such person is not fit to defend the right of others. You can’t defend the right of others, if you can’t defend your own rights. This is why I have always maintained that there are very few lawyers in Nigeria who deserve to be called legal practitioners, what we have are business men and women who trade in the legal profession. If not, the abusive system in the Nigerian Law School could not have been tolerated for this long without much resistance. It appeared lawyers are now trained to be docile, so they could not defend human right, but to wear wig and collect certificate. For the Nigerian law school, which has become notorious in flagrant violation of basic rights of many Nigerians, including female Muslim Students who have been consistently denied their right to decent

Image
It is no longer news that one Mrs. Maryam Sanda is alleged to have killed her husband, Bilyamin Bello a son of former People's Democratic Party Chairman. The suspect is being prosecuted at an FCT High Court in Abuja. When the hearing of the case came up last month, Maryam was seen carrying the Quran, Muslim holy book and beed around and using it to cover her face. She was also seen reading the Quran while inside the court room. The question is, why is Maryam carrying the Quran and beed to court and why is she reading the Quran inside the court while the case is going? If you understand why, kindly drop your comment for education purpose. Meanwhile, the mother of the suspect and her brother have also been joined in the suite as accomplice. On Thursday, Mrs. Sanda’s mother, Maimuna, who is also facing a separate charge of fraud, was arraigned with her daughter along side two others. Kwara Must Change is pleased to bring back to the fore, the 3 criminal charges Senator Bukola Saraki must contend with at the Code of Conduct Tribunal as ordered by the Appeal Court in its recent judgement ordering the Senate President back to the CCT to enter his defense. The Court of Appeal in Abuja reversed Saraki’s acquittal of false assets declaration charges. The appellate court, in a unanimous judgment by a three-man panel, led by Justice Tinuade Akomolafe Wilson, ordered Saraki to return to the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) for the continuation of his criminal trial. Kwara Group React To Appeal Court Judgement Ordering Saraki Back To CCT

Image
PRESS RELEASE. Kwara Must Change welcome the judgement of the Court of Appeal, which ordered the Senate President, Bukola Saraki back to the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) to enter his defense on 3 criminal charges and account for his false asset declaration. The people of Kwara are convinced that the undeclared assets were probably bought with looted funds from Kwara State treasury and we look forward to diligent prosecution of those 3 charges and the safe return of the properties to its rightful owners. We recall that when Justice Danladi Umar led CCT upheld the no case submission of Mr Saraki and dismissed the 18 count charges months ago, Kwara Must Change was one of the groups that appealed to the Federal Government to appeal the judgement in the interest of justice, which they did to wide jubilation among Kwarans. After the notice of appeal was filed, Mr Saraki claimed at the time that the appeal is futile effort against him since he believed he has successfully bought

Appeal court ban EFCC from prosecuting corrupt Judges despite evidence of bribery

You Can’t Prosecute Judges, despite evidence of bribery, court tell EFCC The court of appeal in Lagos has banned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from prosecuting corrupt judges despite evidences of bribery. The court gave the ruling following an appeal which Robert Clarke, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN) filed on behalf of Hyeladzira Nganjiwa, a serving judge of the federal high court. The EFCC had arraigned Nganjiwa on a 14-count charge before Adedayo Akintoye of the Lagos high court sitting in Igbosere. It accused him of allegedly receiving $260,000 and N8.65 million through his bank accounts between 2013 and 2015 from suspicious sources. It said Nganjiwa allegedly used the money to enrich himself as a public official as it did not correspond with his salary, an offence contrary to section 82(a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos state, 2011. It also accused the judge of giving false information to its operatives. But Obaseki Adejumo, the presiding judge,

Extra- Judicial killings: Saraki can't protect you, group tells Sen. Lafiagi

Image
The attention of Kwara Must Change has been drawn to an attempt by the Senate president, Dr. Bukola Saraki to thwart the cause of justice over the gruesome killings of innocent youths in Lafiagi town, Kwara State. Information reaching Kwara Must Change indicates that the Senate President has been alleged to be using his office to ensure no action is taken against the Senator representing Kwara North, Shaaba Lafiagi who reportedly ordered the shooting of protesting youths on 17th November 2017. As at the time of writing this report, Sen. Lafiagi and his political aides have intensified plan to thwart justice through sabotage. Reports have it that this morning (Sunday, 10th December 2017), they arranged 16 buses to convey more than 200 indigenes of Lafiagi to have a meeting with the Senate President in Ilorin, the state capital. We reliably gathered that the meeting is to orchestrate how these compromised people would mislead the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and
