Bayelsa state assembly Speaker Blasts Jonathan

Image
The political season is here and politicians, from top to bottom are trying to outshine each other. There were signs of tension and strained relationship between members of Bayelsa State House of Assembly and the speaker, Hon. Kombowei Benson over alleged move to impeach him from office following recent statements attributed to him against President Goodluck Jonathan. While the impeachment move, according to State House of Assembly source, has received the blessing of the state governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson as a “collateral” sacrifice to affirm his loyalty to Jonathan, the loyalists of the speaker, including the chairman, House Committee on Information, Iniobiyo Obiene, and the media assistant to the speaker, Preye Kiyaramo, have dismissed the impeachment plot. But the angry lawmakers were said to have held series of secret meetings in Yenagoa where they discussed and condemned the speaker’s tirade against President Jonathan in an interview he granted a newspaper.

Ronaldo is the reigning titleholder and the current favourite to win this year's prize after inspiring Real Madrid to Champions League glory in May. The 29-year-old has also been widely lauded for his remarkable goalscoring exploits this season but Varela says that Ronaldo still does not get all of the credit he deserves, something he puts down to jealousy. "I do not understand how anyone could criticise him," the former Basel midfielder told AS ahead of Madrid's Champions League clash with the Swiss champions at St. Jakob Park on Wednesday night. "I think his image has a [negative] effect.

Lawmakers order IGP to recognize Tabuwal as speaker

Members of the House of Representatives committee on police affairs were on Wednesday afternoon engaged in a heated argument with Inspector General of Police Suleiman Abba over last Thursday's security siege on the National Assembly.   The committee had summoned Abba to explain the circumstances that led some of his men to prevent Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal from gaining access into the parliament building and in the process harassed the Speaker as well as other lawmakers. But at Wednesday’s session, Abba said some thugs tried to gain illegal access into the premises of the federal legislature. However, the lawmakers were angry when Abba refused to recognise Tambuwal as Speaker and demanded him to revert his position. The session got heated as the lawmakers took turn to rebuff the IGP. Court order police to return Tambuwal security details

Justice Ahmed Ramat Mohammed of the Federal High Court of Abuja has asked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Suleiman Abba to return the security details of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal.  Tambuwal’s counsel, Lateef Flagbemi, who led 68 other lawyers to the trial, commended that the court was set to reconsider the removal of security details from the Speaker, noting that it was a serious matter as the case involved the fourth citizen of the country. Meanwhile, a counsel of the PDP, Unus Ustaz Usman, argued that the court had no jurisdiction to entertain the case, urging to decay the suit. The court said that IGP Abba erred in law by withdrawing the security details of the Speaker when he has not been removed from office. The IGP had, while returning Tambuwal’s security, protected the action through a statement by the Force Public Relation Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, saying that the security personnel attached to the Speaker were w

CBN Devalues Naira From 155 to168 , Raises Lending Rate to13%

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has announced a new official naira-to-dollar exchange rate, forcing down the Nigerian currency by 13 naira, as the country struggles to reshape its fiscal policies in response to dwindling oil price. The bank devalued the naira at its monetary policy committee, MPC, meeting on Tuesday in Abuja, where it also reviewed Nigeria’s monetary policy rate from 12 per cent to 13 per cent. The monetary policy rate highlights lending rate for the country’s economy. The naira will now exchange officially at N168 to a dollar, and no longer N155, the bank said. The bank also moved the private cash reserve ratio from 15 per cent to 20 per cent, while retaining public sector cash reserve ratio at 75 percent. The CBN said the decision to lower the value of naira against the dollar is to strengthen the currency. Mr. Emefiele noted the continued drop in global crude oil prices and reiterated the call on the government and the National Assembly to speed up the pr

National Assembly List 50 "Impeachable Offences" Against Jonathan

Image
Indications emerged yesterday that members of the House of Representatives are on the same page with their Senate counterparts in their bid to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan. PDP senators move to impeach Jonathan

Image
Things are not the same anymore, it is now a case of 'enough is enough' in the political space. Some PDP senators on Monday started impeachment moves against President Goodluck Jonathan over what they have described as the high level of impunity and corruption being condoned by his Presidency. Investigations revealed that the PDP senators had started compiling Jonathan's impeachable offences. “I was personally consulted this evening over the issue and I also cross-checked from my colleagues who also told me that they had been contacted.  “The grouse of the lawmakers, according to the person that contacted me, was that the last week Thursday’s invasion of the National Assembly by the police was carelessly handled by the Jonathan administration.  “From the look of things, the proceedings [to impeach Jonathan] will start on Tuesday because some signatures had been collected already.” An APC Senator disclosed this development to Punch in Abuja on Monday.

Why We Raided APC Office – DSS Marilyn Ogar

The Department of State Security (DSS) has said its operatives invaded the data office of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos on Saturday following a petition it received about some activities of the company. A text message by the spokesperson of the DSS, Ms. Marilyn Ogar on Sunday issued to press men said the petition alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission’s permanent voter’s cards were being cloned at the outfit. According to Ogar, the petition alleged that the “cloning” of the cards was with the intention of hacking into INEC’s data base, corrupting it and replacing them with the “cloned” data. The statement said : “A petition was received by this Service about some activities at No. 10, Bola Ajibola Street, Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos. “Based on this information, the Service placed the building under surveillance; and having been convinced that some unwholesome activities were going on in the building, it undertook a raid of the pr

EXCLUSIVE: Chad ‘fuelling’ Boko Haram Insurgency With Eyes On Borno Oil Deposits

Image
What started as mere suspicion in Nigeria’s security circles is now being treated with utmost seriousness: Chad may be the major backer and staying power of Boko Haram─ with eyes on the oil deposits in the Chad Basin, Borno state. Preliminary surveys have indicated that there is hydrocarbon deposit in an area covering 3,350 square metres in the Chad Basin, with federal government pumping close to N30bn in the last two years into feasibility studies of the oil potential there. Countries such as Chad, Niger and Sudan with similar structural settings are already exploring or producing oil on their own soil, leading to conclusions that it is a matter of time for Nigeria’s turn. The lukewarm attitude of Nigeria’s neighbours, particularly Chad and Cameroon, to the Boko Haram threat has long been attributed to regional rivalry rather than economic interest. However, circumstances surrounding the phantom ceasefire dealbrokered in October by Idriss Déby, the president o
