Open university is better than convdntional school says Obasanjo

Student of National Open university of Nigeria (NOUN) in Abeokuta today hosted former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to discuss the several challenges confronting the institution which include the issue of Law School and NYSC.
The event is over and the host have been busy tidying up. The audio visuals obtained is being processed and would be uploaded to this platform, in due course. It was indeed a remarkable and
insightful event.

In a brief statement released by S.T. TEWE,president of Law Benin study centre, former president, General O.O. Obasanjo informed the student that he would support their quest for accreditation to Law School. However, he suggested that, there may be need for change in the
name of the school by removing the 'Open' and replacing it with 'Distance' ie National Distance Learning University. This he suggested would eliminate the confusion in the nomenclature because
the school is not a correspondence school.

The former president noted that,he knows the Open university course materials are not posted as is the case with correspondence schools but rather, students come physically for them and also relate with facilitators / counselors from time to time.

He maintained that, Open University system of education is better than that of the conventional schools  because there is a high level of dependence on individual learning and discipline for acquiring knowledge.

Chief  Obasanjo promised to work with Professor Sokefun ( dean, faculty of Law) to resolve
the pending matters with the CLE since he has cleared his own doubt about the quality and readiness
of the school authorities to meet the criteria of 3 credit pass in Engl, Lit in Engl and Government, facilitation by lecturers with postgraduate degrees and setting up of law libraries.

He advised that the management of the school should look inward and develop every area of the
faculty so that whenever the CLE decides to visit any of our Centres, we must not be caught napping.

He concluded that,Prof Sokefun as Dean of Law,should 'blow his trumpet' nationally and internationally as a man of various accomplishments and prestige so that the CLE and others
would know that his students will also be of a high quality and competence just like him.
