Group demand arrest and prosecution of Sen. Shaaba Lafiagi over murder of 3 youths in Lafiaji

Kwara Must Change is calling on the federal government to immediately effect the arrest and prosecution of Senator Shaaba lafiagi, over the gruesome killing of 3 youths in Lafiagi town.

The murder of the three youths took place during the November 17 protest against the poor representation provided by Mr. Shaaba Lafiagi, the senator representing Kwara North Senatorial District.

Kwara Must Change had, on November 23, petitioned several agencies, including Police, Army, Federal Ministry of Justice, National Human Rights Commission and others, to demand a proper investigation, arrest and prosecution of the culprits and to get compensation for the victims’ families.

The NHRC acknowledged the petition through a letter dated 27 November, 2017. The commission, in its acknowledgement letter addressed to Kwara Must Change President, Abdulrazaq Hamzat stated that, it has commenced investigation into the matter. "The extra-judicial killings, which was ordered by Senator Sha'aba Lafiagi was registered as C/2017/8542-8547/HQ and the commission said it is currently receiving attention.

However, despite several efforts by Kwara Must Change, the NHRC has not done much on the matter. We reliably gathered that the commission lacks adequate resources to pursue the matter.

In June 2018, Kwara Must Change team visited the headquarters of the commission in Abuja and we were assured that the commission will expedite action, but since that period, nothing has been heard.

It should be made clear that we cannot rest until justice is served and we would continue to hold government accountable.

Kwara Must Change is hereby calling on the federal government to immediately effect the arrest and prosecution of senator Lafiagi to ensure the murdered youths get justice. We are also calling fo adequate compensation of the families of the victims.
