Mention five states in Nigeria that are considered not peaceful based on public perception? That was the question that shaped the private conversation I had with two veteran media personalities and crisis communication experts this past week. It was an unplanned discussion about the role of media in communicating events and shaping perceptions. As we are all aware, media communication in our culture is said to hold an influential place in disseminating information, forming attitudes and motivating behavior. However, according to the conclusion in a Conference of Catholic Churches (CCC, no. 2489), ‘’the more our culture moved away from acceptance of objective truth, the more it has moved toward the culture of opinions’’, which in my view is largely shaped by media reports and perception. On Friday, April 6, 2018, Foundation for Peace Professionals (FPP) publicly unveiled the maiden edition of Nigeria Peace Index (NPI) report in Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital. Nigeria Peace Index...

FPP team in North East, headed by the North East Director, Mr. Alkasim Aliyu embarked on a 5 days situation visit to Maiduguri, Borno State capital from 11th -15th of May, 2018 to assess the living condition of the people, as well as the economic situation. In our visit, it was discovered that Borno state is experiencing the best of time now since 2011, as economic situation, educational progression and other developmental activities are getting better by the day. This is contrary to most media reports which seem to be exaggerating the security situation, particularly in Maiduguri, the state capital. This improvement we observed, in addition to military activities, can be credited to several factors, such as improved activi...

By Abdulrazaq O Hamzat Self determined Nnamdi Azikwe on campaign in 1959 Nigeria Police Force is generally regarded as one of the most corrupt institutions in Nigeria, but how corrupt really is the Nigerian Police and to what extent do they perpetrate their acts of corruption? This is what I tried to find out in my recent trip to Ilorin from Abuja. On 8th May 2018, I embarked on a road trip from Abuja to Ilorin. This is not an ordinary trip like others; it is more like going on a fact finding mission. Before embarking on the trip, I had gone through the route many times and i understand that commercial drivers often part with their hard earned money at every police check points. However, my mission on this trip was to find out, if it is possible for a commercial driver to drive pass these police check points without paying a bribe. On the day of my journey, I woke up early, so as to get to park early and have brief engagement with the drivers. When I got there, i requested t...
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has alleged that the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Kwara State government embolden political thugs to live criminal life. This position was made by the PDP Chairman in Kwara State, Chief Iyiola Akogun Oyedepo while responding to question during interview with Punch. Asked if President Muhammadu Buhari was victimizing Saraki and Governor Ahmed through the police by linking them to the Offa robbery, Chief Oyedepo stated that, the police did not induce the Offa armed robbery suspects to make confessions against Dr. Bukola Saraki. We must be objective in all our analysis or presentation on this matter “We should not tell lies against anybody . The grievances of the nPDP are not the same thing with the criminal allegations levelled against the Senate President and the governor. “If they are pursuing their demands within their party without any link tocrime, nobody will accuse them of committing any crime. Their nPDP activ...
The Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) has released a statement on Tuesday explaining the peaceful nature of their protests before operatives of the Nigerian Army interfered by opening fire into its members injuring many people in the process. A senior member of the IMN’s media forum,Shuaibu Musa, said this yesterday during a media interview and he also accused the Federal Government of deceiving the populace by peddling false narratives of the confrontation. He said: “The claims that we are moving around with weapons are unsubstantiated. All the marches we have done previously without army or police interference have always ended up peacefully. The question to ask is: who have we ever attacked? “Let me tell you in Abuja we held a daily sit-out for over a hundred days and nobody was hurt until they (security agents) came and attacked us. “What is confrontational about a group of people that would come out en masse with their children, women and even their disabled to make their...
