You don’t have power to ban free movement, KMC tell Kwara Governor

Leading Pro-Democracy group in Kwara State, Kwara Must Change (KMC) has urged Kwarans to continue to exercise their democratic rights of freedom of association and movement as contained in the constitution of the country.

The group rejected ban of free movement and street rally by the Kwara State government as pronounced by Governor Abdulfatai Ahmed earlier today.

Kwara Must Change, in a statement by its state coordinator, Comrade Yusuf Olatunji stated that, freedom of movement is a constitutional right that cannot be taken away by any individual or government.

According to Yusuf, Chapter 4, Section 41 of the Nigerian constitution guarantees every Nigerian the right to associate and move freely and that free movement; include the right to hold rallies.

Kwara Must Change maintained that, the right to free movement is not only protected in the Nigerian constitution, it is also a universal right coded in Article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and as such, cannot be taken away by any state.

‘’While we encourage the state government to take decisive actions against those who violate any law, we are of the views that, acting with impunity, by attempting to take away people’s right through the back door shall not be acceptable''.

''We will support any government action to stop further violence in the state, but such action must be in line with the Nigerian constitution'', it said.

The group therefore urged the state government to resist the temptation of playing politics with the lives of Kwarans

The residents of Aiyelabegan Compound in Agbaji District of Okemale Area in Ilorin has called on the Emir of Ilorin Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari and the various security agencies in Kwara state to call the supporters of Senate President Bukola Saraki to maintain the peace for which its neighbourhood has always been known for. Kwara worker commit suicide over unpaid salaries

A staff of Universal basic education (UBE) in Kwara state has reportedly committed suicide over unpaid salaries. The news was broken by a group, Kwara Must Change which said it regretted to bring to public attention, the death of Mr Biodun Bashir, a staff of Universal Basic Education (UBE) in Kwara State at Oyun Local Government, who recently hung himself to death over failure of Kwara State Government to pay workers salaries and their continues denial of owing workers. In 2003, Bukola Saraki awarded a water contract of N2.3Billion and Governor Abdulfatai Ahmed also added another N5billion immediately he took over. We need an explanation, on why the people of Kwara State have to endlessly continue endure so much hardship, pain and suffering due to government inability to provide basic necessity such as water. Water is a necessity of life and its provision is a basic responsibility of all responsible government. Experts have told us that many water borne diseases can be prevented with availability of portable water to improve hygiene and healthy living, but unfortunately, the health of all Kwarans have been exposed to preventable diseases as a result of lack of water.
