DSS can't blackmail APC with PVC clowning lies

TOP politicians, who have constituted themselves into an opposition group against the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are said to be angry with the Director- General, Department of State Security (DSS), Mr. Ita Ekpeyong, over his handling of the allegations that the All Progressives Congress (APC) planned to clone the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) of the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) ahead of the February polls. Sources in the polity intimated the Sunday Tribune of a secret meeting attended by 13 top players in the nation’s political circles at which they resolved that the Ekpeyong should be dealt with if there is a change of baton at the federal level through the February election. The meeting, which was held in the wee hour of January 7, was hosted in the capital city of one of the South-West states. It was said to have been attended by two serving governors, a former governor and other top politicians from southern and northern parts of the country. “Let us put it on notice to the DG DSS that when the opposition takes over power at the centre the DG DSS will be arrested and dealt with,” the source quoted a top politician at the meeting as saying. The source confirmed that the political leaders at the meeting agreed that the issue of the DG DSS should be treated as crucial and should take a decision on what to do with him in the event the APC wins the February 14 presidential election. According to sources, the politicians were angry that the DG DSS had branded the APC as trying to hack into INEC database and clone the PVCs. They considered the allegation as very dangerous and for which he should be severely sanctioned. Another participant, according to sources had fumed: “The DG DSS cannot blackmail the leading opposition party, the APC, through its claims on the PVCs. It is easy to suspect the man is being used. The APC does not need to hack into the database of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), especially as the party to my knowledge does not have the capacity to monitor who will vote or who will not vote for the APC in every polling unit nationwide before or during the presidential election. The option is to take on DSS as appropriate.” The former governor who was present, it was said, mooted the idea of restructuring the security agencies and to be included as one of the issues on the agenda of the opposition group in the build-up to the February polls. The former governor was said to have volunteered to discuss the details of restructuring with the General MuhammaduBuhari, presidential candidate of the APC. “In view of the effrontery of the DG DSS, we have to include restructuring of the police, DSS and the military on the agenda of the leading opposition party. “We should be able to place them on First line charge. It is also right that the position of DG DSS, the Inspector-General of Police, as well as those of the service chiefs, should be term-bound, such that occupants of such positions cannot be willfully removed from office by any serving president without the support of the Senate. We have seen that this is imperative to curtail these agencies,” the former governor, was quoted to have so declared. Making further clarifications, one of the top politicians was further quoted as saying that the allegations against the APC were weighty, while a serving governor, who also attended the meeting, assured his colleagues that he was able to confirm certain issues arising from the cloning allegation from leaders of the APC, which would aid the party in the elections. The serving governor, it was said, admonished that with access to the electorate, the APC should be encouraged to reach them on phone and determine who voted for whom through Short Message Service (SMS).
