HOW APC RIG ELECTIONS IN LAGOS by MR.RIGHTS

Lagos state government and then ruling party, Action Congress  of Nigeria (ACN) now part of All Progressive Congress (APC) have been accused of deliberately denying Lagosians the opportunity to make their free choices during election periods in the state. This was made known to Mr.Rights by some Lagosians during human right survey in Lagos island market.

Revelation about how former Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) now part of All Progressive Congress (APC) rig elections in Lagos state has emerged from Lagos citizens when MyRights (1st human right newspaper) conducted an investigation on the level of human right awareness among Lagosians.

In the course of the survey,  some shocking revelations were made by some individuals in the market who prefer not to be named.

According to the information gathered, human rights is practical impossible in Lagos, especially in relation with political franchise said one Lagosian.

In his words,
‘’I for example had lived in Germany, UK and I know my rights before coming back home, but here in Lagos, I can’t fight for it because in this market for example, Lagos state government have the total  number of traders  trading in the market and during election period, they would specifically ask all market chairmen to deliver the market to their party at all cost, failure of which they would threaten to demolish or ban the market’’.

He added that, government would tell us they know the numbers of people in this market, so they know the minimum number of votes that must come from the market’s polling unit.
If anyone is proving stubborn, the chairman would report such individual to the government and he or she would be expelled from the market to avoid further problems. Such individual would lost his or her source of livelihood he maintained.

He also noted that in another situation, they would threaten to demolish the market if we fail to deliver the required votes. They would tell us that, weather you deliver or not, we would win the election and after the election,we will return to send you to where you truly belong and as a result of these, even those who live in far away places like ikorodu or other parts of Lagos won’t go home a day to the election to ensure they vote at the market.

Another respondent also contributed by explaining that, ‘’If we risk not complying with the directives, the market may be banned for real, or it may be demolished as we have seen many market demolished under the guise of development and  If that happens, how would we feed our children he asked?

We can’t risk our families well being under the guise of knowing our rights the source said, we just have to comply and live. He submitted.
Others in the market corroborated the above narration but express their inability to change the status quo.
According to another respondent in other side of the market when asked to comment on what others have said, he stated that ’’Not everyone vote for the ACN because they wanted to, but everyone just have to, to avoid any problem.

He maintained that, Even if you prefer another candidate or party, you cant vote for them because we must deliver the market or risk losing our place of business.

We are voting the  then ACN not because we all supported the party’s policies, but we are given no choice. Many among us seriously have problem with the government policies in demolishing markets and other places without any alternatives, but we can’t act. He said

One Alfa in the market also added his voice to the issue saying, it is almost impossible to stop this practice because it has started since the time of former Lagos state governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and it continued under Fashola.

He noted that although, many in the market are followers of the party, but not everyone subscribe to the party’s idea. END
