DEFENDING A PEOPLE: ADDICTED TO SUFFERING (1) by Miriam Yakubu

Image
Many years ago, I wanted to be a nurse but requirement was to be a certified nursing aide with 3 months experience in hospital environment. So I register for a 2 weeks nursing aide classes. I was new in town, don't know my way around and don't know a whole bunch of stuff. I was late on my first day to class, because I mistakenly dropped two busstop short. And instead of taking the next bus with my day pass, I walked it. Into a class already in session, I walked in front of the whole class, towards the teacher who was seated facing the door. I stood blocking the projector ray, and said "good morning Mrs. Givens." "Please call me Tina, get a seat and good morning" she gnarled, as she motioned towards empty seats at the back, and turned her face swiftly back to her slides. MY THINKING: Instead of walking quietly to a seat, I wanted to greet my teacher; good morning, explain why I was late, and apologise. And probably wait for her to decide whether to...

Nigerian lady in war with U.S President Donald Trump

Image
A Nigerian lady, Omarose Manigault who worked as communication aide to United States President, Donald Trump before resigning few months ago is currently in war with the U.S President in a way no one has ever imagined. Indeed, she is the kind of woman the Yoruba people often describe as Obirin bi Okunrin, meaning a woman like a man. In the past 3 weeks, Omarosa has seized the U.S media for herself, serving them with content from the highest level. Like never before, she is dealing with Donald Trump to the amazement of the American media. For the first time ever, Donald Trump is up against someone with the moral stamina and the required skills to serve him in his own coin and if you care to know, the beautiful lady is a Nigerian showing the typical can do Nigerian spirit. “My full name is Omorosaonee; it’s a Yoruba name that means, ‘my beautiful child desired.’ My father’s ...

I do not know Gbemi Saraki

Image
I do not know Gbemi Saraki and she doesn't know me. I have never seen Gbemi Saraki and she has never seen me. I have never spoken to Gbemi Saraki ans she has never spoken with me. But I ask for fairness and respect, not for Gbemi Saraki, but for everyone, including you. This is why I am called Mr.Right. When you hear people call me Mr.Right, it is not because I am always right, but because i always stand for truth and human rights. Ladies and Gentlemen, Did I ask the opposition to give Gbemi Saraki ticket to run for office? No. Did I ask you to support Gbemi Saraki? No. Did I ask you, not to hold Gbemi accountable for her 12 years at the National Assembly? No. So, what did I ask from the opposition? Treat everyone, including Gbemi Saraki fairly and justly. Few days ago, when I published an essay titled ‘’Gbemi Saraki and Kwara opposition’’, I was bombarded with messages and calls, from friends and associates. Few minutes after the essay was published, the calls start...

What friendship can do for peace

Image
By Abdulrazaq O Hamzat Friendship has capacity to inspire peace against all anti-peace forces, no matter how long and bitter the war has been fought. This is what we have learned from Abiy Ahmed (41), the new Prime Minister of Ethiopia in his quest to end his country’s 20 years war with neighboring Eritrea. The youngest leader in Africa chose friendship, not enmity and rather than waste so much time and resources setting up peace commission to discuss possible ways of achieving peace between both countries, the Ethiopian Prime Minister created friendship with his country’s long time enemy and within weeks, their friendship metamorphosed into peace, a deal both leaders say was based on forgiving each other for past offensess’’. This is what friendship can do for peace. When I heard that 33 export larger beer is hosting an essay competition, whose theme is circled around friendship this July, i know those behind this idea are up to something unique. The idea of an essay competitio...

Nigeria Air took the space

Image
Was keeping quiet but then, Nigeria Air took the space. Let’s clear some misconceptions, first there is no Nigeria Air. There is an idea, a desire and some actions to bring the idea to reality. We are still far away. What the minister showcased in UK, was a concept. It was a market test for a desire. The brand is still at infant stage. The ICRC gave a certificate to launch based on some guarantees. The FG can only invest 5% of the total sum, subject to finding investors that will put in the 95%. That is yet to happen. There has been no budget request for the 5%. The planned plane purchase is not funded. I, did not see any $300m in the budget for planes. The roadshow is to find investors. It might happen and it might not. Can we slow down on the name calling and insults? Nigeria on paper belongs to us all. One is not unpatriotic for voicing concerns. Of State owned airlines in Africa, only one is profitable. The rest are subsidised. That knowledge, makes it important that...

She’s loose, really, is she loose? (POEM)

She’s loose, really, is she loose? (POEM) By Abdulrazaq O Hamzat Every prostitute was once a responsible lady Someone broke her hymen and turned her crazy Don’t ask me who it was, just look at the mirror It is someone like you, actually staring at you #STOPSHAMINGWOMEN Remember, she used to be self-restraint and pious But not anymore, because someone broke her sainthood and made her spacious What she used to avoid, now she relish and can’t resist Her former abomination, now her favorite meal, who’s to be blamed? #STOPSHAMINGWOMEN Immorality gives her pleasure; but someone first forced her to do it Now she’s weird, Carrot, banana and cucumber all falls on her But sugarcane is all she seek to derive satisfaction Her abuser gave her rough and she gets satisfied, not in any other way #STOPSHAMINGWOMEN Her power of self-control taken, now she wants it plenty and weird 1 to 10 and still counting, ex’es without number They all call her names to shame her, as if the...

Live positive, feel positive

Nobody is under any obligation to help or support you. It is not even mandatory on anyone to advise or return your calls. Those who offer some advise and words of encouragements deserve some accolades. People who offer support and help deserve greater commendations. And even those who merely responded to your call, but failed to help also deserve some kudos. Nobody is under any obligation to help or support you. If anyone calls you with their credit, thank them. If they picked your call, appreciate them. If they offer you peanut as support, commend them and if they did nothing, do not hold it against them. Nobody is under any obligation to help or support you. Of course, it is expected that friends and family raise each other, but this is not a mandatory obligation. Some people will, some will not. You don't have to be bitter about it, you don't have to regard those who didn't help as enemy or bad people. We are wired differently. If people help you, tha...

One man can bring peace By Abdulrazaq O Hamzat

Image
‘’the peaceful action of a sincere peacemaker can melt the strongest heart of a brutal murderer’’ Abiy Ahmed One man has capacity to inspire peace against all anti-peace forces, no matter how long and bitter the war has been fought. This is what we have learned from Abiy Ahmed (41), the new Prime Minister of Ethiopia in his quest to end his country’s 20 years war with neighboring Eritrea. Eritrea seceded from Ethiopia in 1993 after many years of struggle and internal rift which started in 1974. Five years later, both countries fought over disputed territory along their border. In that unfortunate battle, which signifies the beginning of a long term conflict between the two countries, more than 80,000 people were reportedly killed. Several attempts by the international community to resolve the dispute didn’t yield any result, including a UN backed boundary commission in 2002, which resolved that Ethiopia should cede the town of Badme to Eritrea. Ethiopia refused to honor the ...

One verse (POEM) by Abdulrazaq O Hamzat

One verse can be so lovely and enthralling Like one verse in the holy Quran that says, ‘’Enter absolutely into peace. Do not follow in the footsteps of Satan. He is an outright enemy to you.” One verse can be so awesome and instructive Like a biblical verse that says, “To answer before listening — that is folly and shame.” However, one verse can also be so dangerous and destructive Actually, one verse is the problem of every religion in the world Because of one verse, humans are being slaughtered and murdered all over the world Just because of one verse, Islam was divided into many sects and denominations, yet one verse says let the religion be united as one. If not for one verse, the religion of peace will not be associated with terrorism But for just one verse, members of the same faith are at war with each other How will all the various sects of Islam explain their division to their creator? Maybe, they will quote one verse Christianity was segregated into ...

Saraki, Kwara Govt emboldened thugs to live crimal life- PDP

Image
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has alleged that the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Kwara State government embolden political thugs to live criminal life. This position was made by the PDP Chairman in Kwara State, Chief Iyiola Akogun Oyedepo while responding to question during interview with Punch. Asked if President Muhammadu Buhari was victimizing Saraki and Governor Ahmed through the police by linking them to the Offa robbery, Chief Oyedepo stated that, the police did not induce the Offa armed robbery suspects to make confessions against Dr. Bukola Saraki. We must be objective in all our analysis or presentation on this matter “We should not tell lies against anybody . The grievances of the nPDP are not the same thing with the criminal allegations levelled against the Senate President and the governor. “If they are pursuing their demands within their party without any link tocrime, nobody will accuse them of committing any crime. Their nPDP activ...

Say Something, a compilation by Abdulrazaq O Hamzat

Image
It’s very difficult to speak to a lot of people without offending someone. People walk around with their feelings on their shoulders waiting for you to say something. Opinion police are out there all the time. We have actually reached the point where people are afraid to actually talk about what they want to say because somebody might be offended. I am reminded of a very successful business man who loves to buy his mother these exotic gifts for mother’s day. One year, he ran out of ideas on what to buy and then, he ran across these birds. These birds were cool, you know? They cost $5000 apiece. They could dance, they could sing, they could talk! He was so excited, he bought two of them. Sent them to his mother and couldn’t wait to call her up on mothers day, ‘’mother, mother, what’d you think of those birds?’’ And she said, ‘’they was good.’. He said, No, no, no, mother, you didn’t eat those birds? Those birds cost $5000 apiece. They could dance, they could sing, they could talk!...

The trouble with us By Jaye Gaskiya

Image
Our ruling class maybe failing and may have failed to provide leadership to us as a people, for our country, and for our continent; The quality of leadership provided by this ruling class may have been declining precipitously since independence, it is true; And as a consequence of this failure of leadership, we may have continued to be plagued by a perennial crisis of the failure and even near collapse of governance; as well as a being confronted with the phenomenon of State Failure. Nevertheless, our crisis is also infinitely compounded by our own lack of confidence in ourselves, by our own lack of trust in our capacity and ability, not only to throw off the yoke of this failed class, but to also provide the sorely needed alternative – ourselves! Added to this is our impatience to deal with knowledge, to interrogate and stay with an issue to its logical conclusion; our short attention span. We want answers, but we are not willing and able to undertake the rigour that comes with so...

IBB had no respect for sycophants - Col. Abubakar Dangiwa (Part 3)

Image
The Col. Abubakar Umar story(Final part) "This was how it happened" Two days after my meeting with IBB, I got a call from Col. Yakubu Muazu who asked me to meet Gen. Abacha at his residence in Kano the next day. I met Abacha around 9pm on a Saturday. The General went direct to business. He told me of the efforts of his group to stop the annulment of the election but they failed. But that could not be allowed to stand in view of its far reaching ramifications to the unity and stability of the country. He also told me of some security reports which revealed a plan by some Yoruba organizations which were plotting to declare an Oduduwa Republic. These groups, he said, enjoyed the support of some officers of southern extraction. He mentioned some names, which included some so‑called IBB boys. The General waxed nationalistic but I was not deceived. I had since begun to suspect Gen. Abacha's sincerity and motives and I was not certain that he indeed believed he could come...

IBB had no respect for sycophants - Col. Abubakar Dangiwa (Part 2)

Image
The Col. Abubakar Dangiwa Umar story (part two) "My relationship with General Babangida" “I had on several occasions in the past explained why I enjoy a very close relationship with IBB. IBB was my instructor at the Nigerian Defence Academy. Since then, I found him to be a very brilliant and inspiring officer. In fact, he had great influence on my career choice of the armoured corps, being an amour officer himself. Of course, we had disagreements, some of them quite straining, but they have not succeeded m changing my perception of him. This is true with most officers who worked closely with the man. With all this, I had never allowed such a close personal relationship to becloud my vision and judgment of his performance as a superior officer, particularly during his eight‑year rule as President and C‑in‑C. Mr. Edwin Madunagu, a man I have high regards for as an accomplished intellectual and a socially concerned person, confirmed what I have always suspected that most ou...

IBB had no respect for sycophants By Col. Abubakar Dangiwa ( Part 1)

Image
The Col. Abubakar Umar story(part 1) If you are are a lazy person who doesn't want to improve on his/her knowledge, this series may be too long for you read. But you need this perspective from one of the heroes of June 12, Col. Abubakar Dangiwa Umar, a June 12 fundamentalist and an IBB acolyte who resigned his commission in the army because he disagreed with his boss over the annulment of the election. Enjoy it. THE DESCENT INTO THE ABYSS For the records, my pro‑democracy activism started well before the June 12 crisis. When towards the end of 1992, I came to the painful realization that Gen. Babangida was being ill‑advised to once again postpone the transition to civil rule, I decided, in consultation with some of my colleagues, to advise him to save Nigeria from an unnecessary political crisis. The letter part- reproduced below was part of the efforts at getting him to fulfill his promise of handing other power to an elected government. In that letter which was written Oct...
