More than 50 years before the creation of Nigeria as a united entity, Lagos is already a major centre of modern civilisation. Lagos history is rich in Yoruba tradition, trade and commerce, infrastructural development and cosmopolitanism." -EXTRACTED In the past few days, i have followed the unhealthy debate between easterners in Lagos and their host and i must say that such is really uncalled for. No tribe or race is an island of knowledge and civilisation. At one time or the other, each one of them contributed in one way or the other. While it is proper for every one to feel good about themselves and try as much as possible to amplify in a good way, their importance and contribution to the society they live in, it is also very crucial to take into account, the reality of other factors without attempting to ridicule the contribution of others. I therefore advise all those joining the discuss to thread with caution and avoid things that are capable of setting our peop...
FIVE out of every 100 people in Lagos is living with HIV and AIDS, the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA) stated yesterday. Its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Tokunbo Dabiri, explained that the high ratio is not unconnected to the large population of the state. She spoke at the World AIDS Day programme in Lagos organised by LSACA. Describing Lagos State as cosmopolitan, Dabiri added that it its also the melting pot accounting for about 21 million inhabitants. “This is why the disease is common in the state,” she noted. She urged residents, who have not been tested to do so to confirm their status, adding: “ The statistics the state is presently working with is 5.1 per cent . It can be more if we all know our status. The national figure, however, is 3.4 per cent. ” Latest Estimate of Lagos Population: 21 million (via Wikipedia ) Number of HIV/Aids patients in Lagos based on 5.1% prevalence rate from the article = 5.1% of 21 million = 1.071 Million Source: nairaland ...
The founder of the Latter Rain Assembly, pastor Tunde Bakare has accused former President, Olusegun Obasanjo of killing students’ unionism in the country when he was the military Head of State in 1978. Bakare, who was a running mate to Buhari in the last presidential election made the claim on Monday at the 2014 anniversary of the International Day of Students. According to him, Obasanjo, as the then Head of State in 1978, used brute force to repress the students during the ‘Ali Must Go’ protest. Some students were killed in the protest. One of them was Akintunde Ojo. Delivering a paper titled, “Good Governance: Sustainability of Democracy, the Role of Students in the Forthcoming General Elections”, Bakare said it was unfortunate that students’ unionism had been hijacked by unserious students. Recalling the history of students’ unionism from the colonial days, he noted that it suffered a fatal blow in 1978. He said, “General Olusegun Obasanjo’s government ordered the brutal suppres...
Marriage is an issue of morality not legality. If you are tied by legality, your marriage can only be maintained by legality and if you are tied with morality, that’s what can sustain your marriage. The foundation of a union determines the conduct in it. To my understanding, Legal marriage makes couple act like legal competitors, they are never free to express themselves to bridge their different backgrounds. While they profess love and smile, deep inside them, they focus more on their legal grounds. At every slight misunderstanding which are inevitable in any marriage, their mind goes straight to their legal position. The husband don’t want to correct his wife on what displeases him in her conduct because he doesn’t know her next reaction, while the wife on the other hand is always being careful to have legal advantage in case they have to resort to where they started (court). Here, they are already preparing their separation even on their wedding day. How can there...
Scientists Baffled by Mysterious Shield Protecting Earth from Being Obliterated by the Sun News Release : Dec 1, 2014 : University of Colorado "Somewhat like the shields created by force fields on 'Star Trek' that were used to repel alien weapons, we are seeing an invisible shield blocking these electrons. It's an extremely puzzling phenomenon." -Professor Daniel Baker "But you, LORD, are a shield around me..." –Ps. 3:3 (Boulder, CO)—A team led by the University of Colorado, Boulder, has discovered an invisible shield some 7,200 miles above Earth that blocks so-called "killer electrons," which whip around the planet at near-light speed and have been known to threaten astronauts, fry satellites and degrade space systems during intense solar storms. Doctor is basically a title for teachers or scholars. It was derived from the Latin word doceō (I teach). Ironically, it has been observed that the use of Doctor’s title is confusing in today’s world. For example, if someone is addressed as doctor today, no one can properly predict their profession or qualification. This is so because in a general sense, there are three (3) majorly recognized bearer of the Doctor’s title in Nigeria. We have the Medical Doctors, Academic doctors (PhD) and honorary Doctors. Although, there are other bearers of Doctors title, but in Nigeria, these are the 3 mostly recognized and used in public space. From the laymen point of view, the only people mostly recognized as doctors are medical practitioners. As a matter of fact, some laymen do not know there are other kind of doctors. Recently, I heard of a story in which a man is called doctor in his area. One day, a child suddenly fell sick early in the morning, but rather than rush the child to t...
The Naira And Its Misfortune Last week’s devaluation of the Naira by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over falling Brent crude oil prices indicates that tough times are ahead for the common man and the economy unless urgent steps are taken to address the crises, writes COLLINS NWEZE. President Goodluck Jonathan formally unveiled the redesigned commemorative N100 banknote on November 12. Paradoxically, the banknote, meant to mark Nigeria’s 100 years as a single united nation, can only buy a small loaf of bread, insufficient to kill hunger pangs in a child. Thirteen days after the launch, like others, the new banknote, which will be issued to the public later this month, lost eight per cent of its value against the dollar. That was after the Central Bank-led Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) devalued the naira. The local currency has been devalued by 35 per cent in the last 13 years. The CBN in 2001 cut its value by 27 per cent, followed by the current eight per cent slas...
