Can i get to know you?
My names are Ashim AFOLASHADE H. GOLD, an undergraduate of LLB student at the National Open University of Nigeria.
How did you become an open university student?
I became a student at the open university through a friend who hinted me about the institution as a mean to work and learn as an adult in the year 2010.
As an open university student, how do you react to peoples comment about the institution?
Well, if I would say, the view of people who categorized open university as an institution with less proficiency or for the unserious fellow is totally wrong, 'U only need to be there because seeing is believing. we shouldn't forget our ex-president OBJ was a product of the school, presently undergoing his masters. Other tertiary institute is no where to be compared because as a matter of fact, Open university is for the serious minded and focus individual not all this teen of nowadays that doesn't know what to do with there lives. Most especially, our Law isn't what anyone can dabble into without adequate preparation.
Do you think students of other institutions are in anyway better than students from open university?
I will say that depends on how you build yourself as an individual not about the institution because the same school that breeds the brilliant ones also breeds the dull ones. Open university student can be more better as we have been thrown open to challenges and its a school for the mature mind. Once upon a time, our law student competed with unilag and other open universities abroad in essay writing and we came 3rd. There was also an interstate competition with other schools and we came 1st 2012/13. So, with this evidences, I assure you that open university breed good products.
Why did you decide to study law?
My decision to study law is personal, no 1 chosed my course for me, but I have been a person that hated cheating from childhood. Since then, I have made up my mind that its either Law or nothing. Its the course that can make me defend the public and my right.
Do you think lawyers are doing enough for Nigeria?
Well to me,I will say Lawyers are trying there best, as some even lose their lives in the process of defending human right and more due to corruption. Some top leaders hide under their immunity to disregard and abuse Lawyers politically.
Who is your legal model and why?
My legal Model are the likes of GANI FAWEHIM, SAN FALANA,SAN PAUL ANNANBAL and some of the senior lawyers at the Lagos bar association like Barrister Taiwo Taiwo, Hannibal and their likes to mention few.
Human right abuses are much in the country. What would you do to help victims if you are called to bar?
Soon after my graduation, I’ll Establish a foundation on the basis of Human Right which will enable people enjoy Fair justice without spending a dine, so far you can proof you are innocent. Remember, "he who comes to equity comes with clean hands".
What do you dream to achieve in the legal profession?
I wish to create a better Nigeria that we can all be proud of by protecting and promoting justice.
The current chief judge in Nigeria is a woman, what role can women lawyers play to reduce rape and violation of women?
The duty of protecting violation of women and reduce rape is the work of both sexes and not women alone, but being the chief justice, her position can be used to turn things around with adequate implementation of justice. More importantly, we must know that the role to protect women is not just of the lawyers, but everyone.
Thank u Mr. Right
