Kwara Must Change, other CSO’s demand arrest of Senator Sha’aba Lafiaji over extra-Judicial killing

PRESS RELEASE: RE EXTRA-JUDICIAL KILLING OF 4 LAFIAJI YOUTHS BY SEN. SHAABA LAFIAJI, ABUJA – 19TH NOVEMBER 2017. On Friday, 17th November 2017, 4 bright and promising young men were shot dead by soldiers attached to Senator Sha’aba Lafiaji for exercising their fundamental human rights of peaceful protest against the senator over misrepresentation of the people. The Nigerian Police Force (NPF), Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corp (NSCDC) and other security agencies have confirmed the unfortunate killing. The reprehensible occurrence, which led to the brutal execution of defenceless, unarmed and peaceful protesters happened as a result of high level irresponsibility, rascality and lack of maturity, which propelled Senator Muhammed Shaa’aba Lafiaji to order soldiers to execute protesting youths who were merely expressing their disaffection with the senator’s lack of proper representation of the people and we unequivocally condemn the barbaric act of Senator Shaaba Lafiaji and his goons of blood thirsty soldiers. For the avoidance of doubt, the youths who demonstrated against Senator Mohammed Sha'aba Lafiagi on that fateful day have every right to do so. It is even more important because the Senator is one of those that have completely given up on their constitutional duties to look after the welfare of their constituents. For many years, the main road that leads into Lafiagi town has been in a very bad state of disrepair. It was not motorable for quite some time. This includes a dilapidated culvert at Sobo. In order to fix this problem that has clearly affected the economy and mobility of the good people of Lafiagi town, the patriotic youths of the town mobilized financial resources and fixed half of the road. When the Senator showed up with his entourage on Friday, the youths stopped his convoy and asked him to own up to his responsibility by fixing the remaining half. Instead of placating the youths by showing maturity and leadership, the bloodthirsty Senator Mohammed Sha'aba Lafiagi called on upon trigger happy soldiers, who opened fire on the peaceful demonstrators, thereby instantly killing four (4) students of the Lafiagi College of Education who were part of the protest. The supposed lawmaker has thus become a law breaker and must not escape from the wrath of the law. The killing was a needless waste of human life, engineered by a politician, who was once the Kwara State Governor and feels that he is above the laws of the land. With brutal, vision-less and spineless tyrants like Senator Mohammed Sha'aba occupying our Senate, no meaningful laws will ever be made for the benefit of the masses. And Nigeria may never be able to attain her full potential as one of the greatest countries on earth. In view of this unfortunate situation, we the undersigned Civil Society Organizations (CSO) aver that the days of impunity and extra-judicial killings are well and truly over in Nigeria and we therefore demand that the Inspector General of police, as a matter of urgency, order the arrest and prosecution of Senator Mohammed Sha'aba Lafiagi and his trigger happy soldiers within 2 weeks, else we will call for civil action against the politicians in National Assembly. Meaning, no Senator or Member of House of Reps will walk freely on the street without explaining the reason behind the outright killings of citizens without repercussion. This demand should be taken very seriously and acted upon with immediate effect because justice delayed is justice denied! Signed: 1. Kwara Youth Stake Holders Forum - Charles Ofemi 2.
