Unity convention doesn’t amount to unity in NANS By Abdulrazaq O Hamzat

Will NANS ever be united? This is not a question; it is a challenge to those presently leading NANS and those that may likely lead it in the future. Will you ever make NANS truly united? After reading that Chinonso Obasi and Aruna Kadiri have agreed to host a unity convention for the upcoming NANS election, I can’t but ponder about similar incident that happened some years back. Just few years ago, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) was factionalized. Comrade Imagwe Jude and Comrade Ini Ememobong both lay claim to the NANS presidency. After their tenure expired, well meaning comrades and stakeholders advocated for the need to have a united NANS and a unity convention was held, that produced Yinka Gbadebo. After Yinka Gbadebo emerged as NANS President, it was assumed that unity has finally returned to NANS and that the unity would be sustained to make NANS a strong and vibrant students body that would be able to defend the right of the Nigerian Students. However, ...

We believe that only by documenting the names of the victims, wi...

Media perception and Nigeria peace index by ABDULRAZAQ O HAMZAT

Image
Mention five states in Nigeria that are considered not peaceful based on public perception? That was the question that shaped the private conversation I had with two veteran media personalities and crisis communication experts this past week. It was an unplanned discussion about the role of media in communicating events and shaping perceptions. As we are all aware, media communication in our culture is said to hold an influential place in disseminating information, forming attitudes and motivating behavior. However, according to the conclusion in a Conference of Catholic Churches (CCC, no. 2489), ‘’the more our culture moved away from acceptance of objective truth, the more it has moved toward the culture of opinions’’, which in my view is largely shaped by media reports and perception. On Friday, April 6, 2018, Foundation for Peace Professionals (FPP) publicly unveiled the maiden edition of Nigeria Peace Index (NPI) report in Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital. Nigeria Peace Index...

CONSTITUENCY PROJECTS AND NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROCESS: THREAT OR OPPORTUNITY? BY JAYE GASKIA

Image
Fourteen years after the practice and phenomenon of Constituency projects began to evolve in the legislative practice and appropriation process of the 4th Republic, the phenomenon has grown to become pervasive across the Federation with both Federal and state legislatures now fully embracing the practice. Yet, nearly a decade and half on, there is still no clarity regarding the practice, with respect to any form of agreed framework guiding its implementation. There is, as of the moment of writing this piece in 2018, no policy, legislative nor institutional framework underlying and providing not only pragmatic, but also scientific criteria and parameter for determining the why, how, and where of constituency projects. And even though there are currently draft bills being considered by both chambers of the National Assembly [NASS] aimed at providing a regulatory framework for the practice, the bills have nevertheless remained stuck within the opaque labyrinth of the legislative proce...

PDP to FG, heed Bill Gates advice

Image
Instead of diverting public attention with its usual deceit and propaganda, the APC government should gear up and deliver on its hundreds of unfulfilled campaign promises, the PDP Caucus in the House of Representatives has said. In a statement issued by the House Minority Leader, Honourable Leo Ogor, the PDP House caucus warned that the APC’s uncharitable use of the Chibok’s girls’ abduction during the 2015 political campaigns along with its current propaganda efforts cannot help APC win re-election in 2019. “Over and over, it has been proven that hands down, the current APC government in Nigeria beats all preceding administration, including the colonial ones, in the sinister art of deceitful lies and propaganda. “With fiendish mercilessness, APC’s 2015 campaign milked the unfortunate abduction of Chibok girls for every available ounce of propaganda and disinformation against the preceding administration; its campaign rhetoric and official hoopla from the lying ministe...

Slavery, intimidation and Corruption in Fidelity Bank

Image
NNAMDI OKONKWO, GMD FIDELITY BANK PLC My nature as a socio-political crusader does not allow me to keep quiet when things are going wrong in my environment, especially when innocent members of the society are unduly being punished; perhaps because they have nobody to speak for them. Few days ago, I gave a hint on my facebook wall that I would be exposing the dirty deals of a new generation bank and the excesses of the Department of State Security (DSS), who has today become a tool in the hands of some so called highly placed Nigerians to dehumanize and torture innocent Citizens of this country. The despicable activities of Operatives of the Department of State Security(DSS) has therefore made me to conclude that the Security outfit is a criminal organization used by highly placed people in this country to intimidate any member/members of the public who is/are perceived as an obstacle to their inglorious quest for questionable wealth, position and power. THE SYNOPSIS OF THE ...

Man Behead his uncle over disagreement (Pics)

Image
The problem with some Nigerians is not ethnicity or religion, it it out right lack of humanity. We must make concerted efforts to bring back our humanity. A man identified as Chief Joshua Ekpo was allegedly killed by his nephew on Sunday 25th March, 2018, at Eyosio - Osung Village in Udung Uko local government area of Akwa Ibom state. The man was allegedly attacked and beheaded by his nephew after a disagreement. When we hear about killings between two groups of different ethnicity or religion, we are quick to claim one ethnic group is bad, but what do we say when people from the same family are killing each other over none issue? Check the picture below, does it make any sense that a family member beheaded his uncle in such an evil manner? So, what do you expect from a person who could kill his own family over little disagreement to do with people of different ethnic or religious when they have misunderstanding? No tribe or religion is bad on it own, however, there are bad p...

Press Release on Boko Haram Situation in North East

Image
The terrorist insurgency group, Boko Haram is yet to be defeated, degraded or decimated, this is the glaring truth that must be accepted and confronted with all sincerity, so that they can truly be defeated and decimated beyond the rhetoric. While the group is no longer gaining more grounds like it used to do during the previous administration, they are still very much alive and active. It has in our observation, adopted a different mode of operation, which is no longer about sacking communities or gaining territories, but consolidating its achievement and gaining the heart of the people in the area it has significant influence, a method that seems to be silently working in its favor, as seen in their heroic welcome in dapchi Village, when they returned the abducted Dapchi girls on 21st Marhc, 2018. Contrary to popular claims that the people were excited because the abducted girls were returned, Foundation for Peace Professionals (FPP) hold the views that, what was seen in Dapch...

How Pius Adesamni saved 2 lives

Image
Emergency Relationship Counselor- by Pius Adesanmi I may have saved her relationship this past January when I was in Ghana. A brilliant Ghanaian millennial. One of my graduate student mentees in Accra. She'll go places in academia. I notice she is sad. In Africa, you can poke your nose and ask personal questions in ways that would get you into a load of cultural and legal trouble in Oyinbo land. So I poke my nose into her business the African way. She breaks into tears. Prof, can I talk to you? I'm all ears. Prof, it's my fiance. What about him? He is misbehaving? Sort of. He is in America. He lives in Los Angeles. He came home for Christmas and promised my parents that he would return later this month for our registry marriage. This is mid-January and he has been dodging my calls. We chat but he is not saying anything about when he is coming for the marriage. How old is your fiance? 29. I see. How long has he been in America? About five years now....

Saraki cannot chose governor for Kwara in 2019

Image
Kwara Must Change wishes to assure all Kwarans that for the first time in recent history, the people will be the sole determinant of their leaders come 2019. This assurance became necessary due to the activities of some political jobbers, who are proving themselves enemy of the people by attempting to sell the future of the state as they have always done by usurping the democratic right of the people to choose their own leaders. A group, which called itself Coalition of Registered Political Parties in Kwara State reportedly called on Senate President Bukola Saraki to intervene in the choice of governorship candidate in the state. The group made the call in a letter written to Saraki which was signed by its coordinator, Alhaji Ahmed Abdullahi and widely reported across the media. Kwara Must Change hereby condemn such an undemocratic call in the strongest term and we are informing the inconsequential group that never again, will Saraki or any individual be allowed to choose gover...
