Kanye West and the ‘’I love you’’ challenge
Few days ago, American hip hop rapper, Kanye West challenged the world to love everyone irrespective of past disagreement.
The legendary music genius wrote on his twitter page,’’ I've got a new challenge for everyone today. Pick somebody that you had an argument with that you think you hate maybe even someone you haven't spoken to in years and contact that person and tell them, ‘’I love you’’.
While the mainstream media and analysts have concentrated their arguments on whether or not it is proper for Mr. West to declare that he loves U.S President Donald Trump, what is not being talked about is the fact that, many of Mr West followers had taken the challenge to heart and have started contacting people they had problems with in the past or those they have not contacted in years, texting them ''i love you''.
Some people who carried out the challenge reported the responses they got and it is very interesting. An entertainment news site, nme.com compiled at least 8 people who took the challenge and shared the responses they got.
Out of these 8 people who texted I love you to some people they had problems with in the past, only 3 of them got bad responses. The remaining 5, who texted I love you to someone got love back in return.
Even those who didn’t get good responses have opened line of communication and we never can tell where that communication would lead to.
As I reflected over the love Kanye West is advocating for and the backlash he is getting for daring to advocate what the world dearly need at this pressing moment, I began to ask myself, what does it really cost to love people, even when we disagree with each other?
Why is loving people so hard, when it’s very easy to hate?
Does it really mean love is costly and hate is cheap?
If yes, how do we turn the table around?
We need to ponder
