Kwara State Polytechnic needs help says group
KWARA POLY NEEDS HELP
Kwara Must Change has properly investigated the issue of school fee increment in the Kwara State polytechnic and the confusion generated by the unfolding drama.
In the course of our investigation, we were able to establish that indeed, the Kwara State Polytechnic increased it fees and this increment was done with the full approval of the Kwara State government. Kwara Must Change was also able to establish that, the purported reduction of N5000 as directed by the government was never implemented, it was actually not meant to be implemented. While the said N5000 was indeed removed from the student portal; it was added at the point of payment.
Additionally, contrary to the back and forth denial and blame game being orchestrated by the state government to confuse the general public, Kwara Must Change would like to state as follows:
1. In the past 6 years, Kwara State Polytechnic has not received one naira from government has subvention. Government doesn’t fund the institution. The Polytechnic relies on internally generated funds to sustain itself. This is why the polytechnic often admit so many students beyond their capacity and also sell admission to anyone who can afford to pay. It’s a strategy of survival, just to be able to generate enough funds to cater for their financial obligations.
2. Kwara State Polytechnic generate their own money through all sorts of charges to students and from these funds, they pay their staff, build infrastructure and maintain the institution. While every other institution in the state is owing workers months of salaries, Kwara State Polytechnic is the only state institution not owing workers.
3. Due to the lack of subvention from state government and increased burden, the Polytechnic has been unable to meet up with its obligation, particularly in terms of promoting workers and building necessary infrastructure. Many of their staff due for multiple promotions have remained in the same position largely due to financial consideration.
4. Despite this unfortunate situation, the Kwara State government has also been making excessive financial demands from the polytechnic and the polytechnic’s management could not turn down these demands. What this means is that, Kwara State polytechnics is funding the Kwara State government, in addition to funding itself.
5. As a result of excessive funding demand by the Kwara State government, the polytechnic could no longer meet its financial obligation and decided that the only way out is to increase the school fee. The management came to the realization that without increasing the school fee, the polytechnic could no longer survive.
6. The proposal for school fee increment was made and submitted to the Kwara State governor and it was approved. The polytechnic only implemented the policy as approved by the State Governor.
7. Understanding that the public would react negatively to the increment, both the government and the Rector decided that there is need to create some confusion about the increment to confuse and deceive the public.
8. This is what led to the public denial of the state government and even the Polytechnic. While the students are paying the already increased fee, both the State government and the Polytechnic's management were busy deceiving the public to shift attention from the main issue.
9. As students and general public protest the increment, the state government reportedly asked the polytechnic to reduce the fee by 50%. However, while this amount was removed from the student portal, the students were still forced to pay the full increment at the deduction stage.
10. Kwara Must Change hereby state that, the increment of school fee as not the doing of the polytechnic, but that of the Kwara State government. We also state that, Kwara State Polytechnic needs help. All well meaning Kwara needs to prevail on the state government to not only desist from taking money from the Polytechnic, but to also fund it properly.
11. Kwara Must Change therefore urge all Kwarans to properly direct their agitation to the appropriate authorities, rather than attacking the Polytechnic, since it is also a victim.
