Elumelu Foundation to invest $10million for 1,000 African startups [DETAILS] by Muyiwa Matuluko For all the debate about lack of funding for African tech startups, things are about to make a turn for better in 2015. The Tony Elumelu Foundation is looking to provide 1000 entrepreneurs from across the continent with $10,000 in seed funding. The funding will be provided via the new Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme (TEEP), under which the 1000 participating startups will undergo 12 weeks of learning entrepreneurship and business skills required to launch and run their businesses at the early stage. They plan to do this every year for the next 10 years. That amounts to at least $100 million for 10,000 startups by 2025. Applications are now open and close by the 1st of March 2015. Who is Eligible ? TEEP is open to citizens and legal residents of all 54 African countries, aged 18 years and above. Both new business ideas those in existence for less than three years are eligible to apply. Applicants can only submit one business. Lagos Has over 1 Million HIV/AIDS Patients

FIVE out of every 100 people in Lagos is living with HIV and AIDS, the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA) stated yesterday. Its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Tokunbo Dabiri, explained that the high ratio is not unconnected to the large population of the state. She spoke at the World AIDS Day programme in Lagos organised by LSACA. Describing Lagos State as cosmopolitan, Dabiri added that it its also the melting pot accounting for about 21 million inhabitants. “This is why the disease is common in the state,” she noted. She urged residents, who have not been tested to do so to confirm their status, adding: “ The statistics the state is presently working with is 5.1 per cent . It can be more if we all know our status. The founder of the Latter Rain Assembly, pastor Tunde Bakare has accused former President, Olusegun Obasanjo of killing students’ unionism in the country when he was the military Head of State in 1978. Bakare, who was a running mate to Buhari in the last presidential election made the claim on Monday at the 2014 anniversary of the International Day of Students. According to him, Obasanjo, as the then Head of State in 1978, used brute force to repress the students during the ‘Ali Must Go’ protest. Some students were killed in the protest. One of them was Akintunde Ojo. Delivering a paper titled, “Good Governance: Sustainability of Democracy, the Role of Students in the Forthcoming General Elections”, Bakare said it was unfortunate that students’ unionism had been hijacked by unserious students. Doctor is basically a title for teachers or scholars. It was derived from the Latin word doceō (I teach). Ironically, it has been observed that the use of Doctor’s title is confusing in today’s world. For example, if someone is addressed as doctor today, no one can properly predict their profession or qualification. This is so because in a general sense, there are three (3) majorly recognized bearer of the Doctor’s title in Nigeria. We have the Medical Doctors, Academic doctors (PhD) and honorary Doctors. The Naira And Its Misfortune Last week’s devaluation of the Naira by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over falling Brent crude oil prices indicates that tough times are ahead for the common man and the economy unless urgent steps are taken to address the crises, writes COLLINS NWEZE. President Goodluck Jonathan formally unveiled the redesigned commemorative N100 banknote on November 12. Paradoxically, the banknote, meant to mark Nigeria’s 100 years as a single united nation, can only buy a small loaf of bread, insufficient to kill hunger pangs in a child. Thirteen days after the launch, like others, the new banknote, which will be issued to the public later this month, lost eight per cent of its value against the dollar.
