What friendship can do for peace

Image
By Abdulrazaq O Hamzat Friendship has capacity to inspire peace against all anti-peace forces, no matter how long and bitter the war has been fought. This is what we have learned from Abiy Ahmed (41), the new Prime Minister of Ethiopia in his quest to end his country’s 20 years war with neighboring Eritrea. The youngest leader in Africa chose friendship, not enmity and rather than waste so much time and resources setting up peace commission to discuss possible ways of achieving peace between both countries, the Ethiopian Prime Minister created friendship with his country’s long time enemy and within weeks, their friendship metamorphosed into peace, a deal both leaders say was based on forgiving each other for past offensess’’. This is what friendship can do for peace. When I heard that 33 export larger beer is hosting an essay competition, whose theme is circled around friendship this July, i know those behind this idea are up to something unique. The idea of an essay competitio...

‘’the peaceful action of a sincere peacemaker can melt the strongest heart of a brutal murderer’’ Abiy Ahmed One man has capacity to inspire peace against all anti-peace forces, no matter how long and bitter the war has been fought. This is what we have learned from Abiy Ahmed (41), the new Prime Minister of Ethiopia in his quest to end his country’s 20 years war with neighboring Eritrea. Eritrea seceded from Ethiopia in 1993 after many years of struggle and internal rift which started in 1974. Five years later, both countries fought over disputed territory along their border. In that unfortunate battle, which signifies the beginning of a long term conflict between the two countries, more than 80,000 people were reportedly killed. Several attempts by the international community to resolve the dispute didn’t yield any result, including a UN backed boundary commission in 2002, which resolved that Ethiopia should cede the town of Badme to Eritrea. Ethiopia refused to honor the ...

Lesson from Africa’s youngest ruler

Image
By Abdulrazaq O Hamzat Abiy Ahmed, Ethopia prime Minister Ethopia’s new Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed (42), who took office in April as Africa’s youngest ruler is currently leading the world with love. He often preach, “Love wins” even when he was attacked with grenade by hostile enemies and narrowly escape death. In June 2018 for example, csmonitor reported that, ‘’after he gave a speech to a large and adoring crowd in the capital, Addis Ababa, someone threw a grenade toward him, killing two people and injuring more than a hundred. However, rather than respond with condemnation of attack as his usually done by most leaders across the world, Abiy simply responded with a love message that says, “Love always wins. Forgiveness will win. Killing others is a defeat.” But this is not the first act of love and forgiveness Abiy has done since coming to office. He has been demonstrating a rare kind of love, similar to the kind of love Kanye West preaches during his recent rant on Twitte...

Trump made this known on Monday during a joint session with Israeli Prime minister,Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump threatens that there won't be peace if the Palestinians refuse to return to the negotiating table, as the Palestine vow to reject Trumps plan. Trump said that "no one could get past Jerusalem, we've taken it off the table," adding that he believes the Palestinians intend to return to the negotiating table, "and if they don't, there will be no peace." Trump told reporters that he intends to build the new U.S. embassy in Jerusalem quickly, adding that he may visit for the planned dedication slated for May 2018. Intolerance, discrimination and sentiments By Abdulrazaq O Hamzat

In a multi cultural and multi religious society like Nigeria, violation of basic rights breeds chaos and disobedience. While discrimination, especially on the basis of religion causes disunity among people, sentiments on the other hand, causes fracture and motivate the feeling of revenge. This is why every lover of peace and unity must at all times, be sensitive to the basic rights of others and not be seen as obstacle for no just cause. Following my publication on the hijab controversy at the Nigerian law school few days ago, titled ‘’Nigerian Law School and the need for change’’, several people had reached out to me to give their views on the subject matter. In view of the numerous messages, I feel that i owe them further explanation in the interest of public good. So, this publication is a follow up to the first one, hoping that people might learn to understand the implication of their actions and its effect on peaceful coexistence, which will directly or indirectly have eff...
