Open University students forgive those who discriminated against them, but won't tolerate recurrence Congress of Noun Students (CONS), the umbrella body of students at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has warned the federal government of Nigeria against subjecting students to unnecessary difficulty. The body, through a statement by its president, Comrade Tijanni Olawoyin noted that it appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari for assenting to the NOUN amendment bill, but advised that government should desist from creating institutions without adequate plan for them. Comrade Tijanni Olawoyin also thank Senator Baru Jibril, who sponsored the NOUN bill, noting that NOUN students have forgiven all those who discriminated against them in the past, but warned that the body would not tolerate a repeat of past occurrence. Comrade Tijani therefore demand immediate inclusion of NOUN students in Law School and NYSC.

A post recently made on facebook by Abdulrazaq O Hamzat, a former President of Congress of NOUN Students (CONS) has generated a new debate about the position of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) among institutions in the country. Hamzat, who is still in court against management of the institution over his unlawful expulsion in 2015 for exposing corruption and forming a student association declared that, despite all the challenges confronting the University, the Open University is still the best in Nigeria. A student of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Abuja Study centre, Comrade Desmond Olufowobi has emerged as Director of Peace and Conflict Resolution at the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone C. According to a report from Congress of Noun Students (CONS) Media unit, the inauguration Ceremony held today 6th of December 2018 at Jalingo, Taraba State. NOUN, via Congress of Noun Students (CONS) was formally welcomed into NANS in December 2017.

The students of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) have accused the school of extortion after the institution announced a N20,000 fee per course to remark their missing examination scripts. According to the announcement on its website, the school will set up a three man committee to re-mark the scripts after receiving the payment. “The 3 Man Committee will be made up of the Head of Unit and two other experts other than those that marked the Script initially. Re- marking shall be completed within two weeks and returned to the University Examinations Committee by the School,” the school said. “The new score awarded shall be approved by the Dean of the School on behalf of the School’s Academic Board which brings it to the notice of the University Examinations Committee.” The school, however, failed to justify the N20, 000 fee it made mandatory for the students. The Senate Arm of the Nigeria Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has approved the Membership Status of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) vide Congress of NOUN Students on a full blown structure of NANS the CONS Public relation officer, Comrade A.L Oyetoro has said. Comrade Oyetoro declared that, this was stated in the communique released and signed by the NANS Senate President Comr. Taiwo Bamigbade, Mohammed Saba (Chairman Comminque Drafting Committee) and Comr. A. Kola (Secretary Comminque Drafting Committee) after the 74th Senate Meeting / Pre-Convention held in Minna, Niger State. The Senate called on the National Executive of NANS to moderate the NOUN Zonal and National Congress and called for a member representative in the National Senate arm of NANS.
