Draw example from Jesus Christ, Olawepo Hashim urges Christians

In this season of Christmas

I join our Nigerian Christian community to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

The commemoration of the birth of Christ presents us with an opportunity to be our neighbours’ keeper, to show love to the less privileged in our society and to do more good to all around us.

In keeping with the teachings of Christ, I enjoin every Nigerian to foster peace and to draw from the example of Christ by providing shelter to those who can't afford to have one within this period.

As we celebrate, let us also remember the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform, who constantly put their life on the line to protect and preserve our Nation.

Let us remember those who have lost their life in the fight for our unity and lend a helping hand to the family they left behind.

This period also presents us with an opportunity to reflect on the great task that lies ahead as we go to the polls.

Let us be reminded that we have the opportunity to rewrite the history of our Nation by electing credible leaders who will protect and preserve our common patrimony.

Once again, I wish Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous new year.

In 1965, Nigeria was operating regionalism, in which every region was controlling its own resources when the first set of violent agitators picked up arms to express their grievances and confront the state violently. This was before the first military coup that eventually pushed the country into civil war.
